Wow! THIS could change everything!

As our consuming world realises that billions of water bottles pollute the planet, we are finding tons of creative ways to recycle water bottles (lining of purses, subway fare in Beijing,…).

Well, recycling all those water bottles might soon not be a problem as London-based students could change the way we consume bottled water. Together, they’ve created Ooho, a biodegradable, edible “blob” that is capable of holding water.

 Yep–you’ve read right! Blob2

Ooho! is a thin membrane made of eatable brown algae, akin to a gelatinous double layer. It’s actually the water inside that gets transformed on its outer form by a culinary process known as spherification (shaping a liquid into spheres which visually and texturally resemble caviar). It is then formed around a mass of frozen water, essentially encapsulating the fluid. When the ice melts, the end result is a strong, cheap alternative to the common plastic water bottle!

The best part:  the inventors plan on making the recipe open source so that everyone will be able to make Ooho! in their kitchen, using the spherification process!!

The product is still in its very early stages of development, but the team is also looking into ways it can be mass produced for commercial use.

Isn’t that sweet!! I wonder how easy it is to carry in your purse!
